About Barcelona

Barcelona is located at grid reference 41º22'N 4º12'E in the north-east of Spain. The maps below show Barcelona's location in Spain.
History
Barcelona has a history going back to pre-Roman times and although in Spain, has a language and cultural identity completely different from the typical image of Spain. Catalunya, and Barcelona in particular as its principal city, has been persecuted throughout the centuries, although it has remained one of the most prosperous regions throughout this time.
Franco banned the Catalan language and culture, and although not the first to do so, the return to democracy after his death has seen a massive surge in the number of people speaking the language and re-establishing Catalan traditions.
Language
 |
Catalunya has a language of its own, spoken throughout Catalunya, Andorra and in the city of Alghuer in Sardinia. Banned during the dark days of Franco, the language is enjoying a renaissance and is widely spoken in the region. Catalan shares the status of official language of the region with Castilian Spanish and almost all official signs will be displayed in the two languages. |
Climate
 |
In Barcelona hot summers contrast with cool winters, and in August, despite the shade in the tree lined boulevards, locals desert the city for the coastal resorts to escape the heat.
While the first temptation is to find a bar with tables outside in the sunshine and an ice cold beer, a few days spent in the heat has most people wanting to head for somewhere cooler. The beaches south of Barcelona at Castelldefels, Sitges and Vilanova are easy to get to by train, while further south towards tarragona the Costa Durada offers miles of beaches. Also The Costa Brava to the north offers many picturesque opportunities to lie back on the sand and work on a tan. |
Prizes
The teams will be set challenges on each day with points to collect on the
route, the team with the most points each day will receive a prize, and the
team with the overall most points at the end in Barcelona will receive the main
prize. collecting the points will not be about who gets to the next stage the
fastest, it will be a methodical challenge for the driver and passengers!
